A Guide to Bespoke Bike Storage Projects: From Concept to Installation

Well-designed cycle storage does more than park bikes. It supports BREEAM targets, enhances ESG credentials, improves user satisfaction and protects long-term asset value. Delivering those outcomes requires a structured, considered approach. Below, we break down the five key stages of a successful bespoke bike storage project.

Why Bespoke Bike Storage Exists

No two developments are the same. Variations in building layout, access routes, user profiles and planning requirements often mean that a standard, off-the-shelf approach to bike parking rarely delivers the best outcome.

That’s where The Bike Storage Company comes in. Whether a development is commercial or residential, a custom-made solution makes better use of space, improves usability, and offers long-term value.

Our team collaborates with you from the earliest concept stage through to final installation – to ensure the bespoke solution fits your needs. The result? Bike storage that’s practical and user-friendly, design-led and sustainable, and looks like it was designed for your development (and not squeezed in as a last resort).

Stage 1: Understanding the Site and the Brief

When it comes to bespoke bike storage, understanding the site is essential – including access routes, structural constraints, ceiling heights, circulation space and more.

Top tip? Map out the cyclist’s journey from arrival on site to their departure. What works on paper must also work in practice. How far would they have to walk to the site entrance once their bike is parked up? How well-lit is the space to ensure accessibility at night?

Planning policy, local authority regulations, and sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM should also be considered from the get-go. At this stage, identifying potential constraints reduces the risk of costly redesigns and delays.

Working with our design team helps ensure cycle parking is fully integrated into the scheme rather than retrofitted later.

Stage 2: Selecting the Right Solutions

Choosing the right combination of bike storage depends on a few key factors:

  • How many people will use the facility
  • Security requirements
  • Weather
  • Available space
  • Design specs
  • Project budget

High-density two-tier bike racks are often the most effective way to maximise capacity where floor space is limited. In constrained areas, vertical storage solutions can provide efficient use of wall space while maintaining usability.

For workplace environments, end-of-trip facilities such as lockers, changing areas and charging provision for E-bikes can significantly improve the overall cycling experience and support staff wellbeing.

Selecting the right products at this stage ensures that the scheme remains efficient and practical through to installation. Need advice? Our expert team and in-house designers are on hand to support you from the start.

Stage 3: Designing the Layout

Successful bike storage should perform efficiently from day one, and the design layout plays a huge part in that. An effective layout balances capacity, accessibility and user flow. Cycle parking should be easy to navigate, with clear circulation routes that allow users to move comfortably through the space.

Poorly planned layouts can reduce capacity and create long-term operational challenges.

Thinking of future expansion? Ensure the layout is large enough to accommodate more cyclist racks later on. Better yet, futureproof now with extra bike capacity and save money in the long run.

Stage 4: Materials, Finishes and Build Quality

Material selection plays a major role in the long-term performance of bike storage solutions.

Durable finishes help protect against heavy daily use and environmental exposure, particularly in external or semi-external locations. The Bike Storage Company ensures high-quality, long-lasting bike storage by using hot-dipped galvanised or powder-coated steel (or a mixture of both). Robust, well-engineered systems reduce maintenance requirements and improve lifecycle value.

All of our products are also Made in Britain, offering advantages in quality control, consistency and supply reliability. Our products are also BREEAM-accredited, meeting the sustainability standards in the UK.

Stage 5: Installation, Quality Assurance and Handover

Even the best design requires proper installation. Accurate setting-out, secure fixing and careful assembly are essential to ensure bike storage operates safely and reliably.

Our quality assurance checks confirm that installations meet design standards and regulatory requirements, a service we provide to all our partners.

As well as this, The Bike Storage Company supplies clear documentation to support teams in managing the space after completion. Operating instructions, maintenance guidance, and layout drawings ensure that the facility can be maintained effectively. A thorough handover means the bike storage is ready for use straight away.

What Good Bespoke Bike Storage Delivers

Bespoke bike storage should be viewed as a process rather than a product. From concept design through to installation, each stage plays a role in delivering a successful outcome.

A well-delivered bespoke bike storage scheme creates a secure, attractive facility that cyclists find easy to use.

It contributes towards BREEAM, ESG and sustainability objectives while improving the overall quality and consistency of the development. Practical, well-planned installations reduce operational issues and minimise ongoing maintenance costs. The Bike Storage Company ticks all those boxes.

When planned early and delivered to specifications, cycle storage will pedal your development into the future – keeping teams, residents and the wider community happy and healthy.

Why Choose The Bike Storage Company?

The Bike Storage Company helps its partners achieve higher scores with BREEAM-accredited products and design expertise. Our range of bike racks, cycle shelters, e-bike lockers and end-of-trip facilities encourages sustainable behaviour, compliance, and of course, a great user experience. All our products are Made-in-Britain and ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certified.

We also make it easy. The Bike Storage Company’s documentation simplifies validation for BREEAM assessors and eases the submission process.

When it comes to compliance, we also provide practical support in the form of:

  • Specification sheets
  • Revit / CAD Drawings
  • BREEAM Statement Templates and supporting paperwork

Modern bike storage will help you meet your long-term sustainability goals, increase property value and tenant desirability.

Bike storage may be the smaller part of a development, but it’s where sustainability truly begins. Futureproof your developments and be ahead of the curve when regulations get tighter. The Bike Storage Company is a trusted partner if you’re looking to cater to the next commuting generation, and it’s a small price to pay for huge environmental and financial returns.

I was skeptical to begin with (big project costing a lot of money) but all fears were allayed once I started to converse with James and the team. Along with the fact that it wasn't my project to begin with, I had picked it up from someone else who had left the school and had all the quotes.

I found the service offered by The Bike Storage Company professional, accommodating and delivered to timescale. The guys in the office were responsive to emails and actually answered questions regarding the installation and the engineers that came to put up the bike shelter actually took on board site specifics in terms of the student start and finish times and also cordoned off the works to ensure safety. Really great service offered and I'd be happy to come back and get any other projects done in the future which I think the school is planning to do. We've also seen a massive increase in student's that ride to school as well which is great!
