The Project

Durham University’s redevelopment of Boldon House was a major refurbishment scheme aimed at transforming the former Northumbrian Water headquarters into a modern, sustainable workplace for Professional Services staff. The project involved complete internal remodel, car park and groundworks, and significant sustainability measure such as an air-source heat pumps, solar panels, and a sedum roof system, helping position Boldon House as one of the University’s most environmentally conscious buildings.
As part of the external works, The Bike Storage Company was appointed to design and install a bespoke cycle storage solution that aligned with the University’s sustainability goals while providing secure, high-quality facilities for staff commuting by bike or e-bike.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed an Amazon Eco Shelter, designed to meet both the practical and environmental ambitions of the project:

• Capacity & Flexibility: Sheffield stands, with integrated provisions for e-bike charging.
• Durability & Compliance: Hot-dipped galvanised steel frame, fully BREEAM-compliant, and built in Britain to the highest standards.
• Sustainable Features:
  • Sedum wildflower roof system supporting biodiversity and enhancing site sustainability
  • FSC-certified Thermopine timber cladding, offering a premium design while meeting environmental standards
• Security: Swing gates clad with galvanised mesh, fitted with heavy-duty mechanical code locks and lockable drop bolts.
• Finishes: Steel fascia for a neat roof surround, combining performance with visual appeal

Optional extras, including bespoke timber benches and timber-clad litter bins, were also integrated to complement the wider external landscaping and support user experience.

The Outcome

The completed shelter provides secure, future-proofed facilities that encourages sustainable travel and reflect the University’s wide commitment to reducing carbon emissions. By integrating bike storage with modern workspaces, Boldon House now offers staff both practical commuting solutions and enhanced on-site amenities.
