Perfume Factory, London
Client: Myles Alexander, Valley Provincial
Location: Perfume Factory, London
Product Installed: Bespoke 14 Space Two Tier Cycle Shelters

Project Overview
Valley Provincial, tasked with transforming the Perfume Factory in London into a mixed-used development, required robust and secure facilities to accommodate the growing number of cyclists commuting. We were commissioned to design, manufacture, and install bespoke Two Tier Cycle Shelters, meeting the client’s need for functional, sustainable, and high-capacity cycle storage.
The Challenge
The Perfume Factory project required an innovative and efficient cycle storage solution to accommodate many users while maintaining the development’s aesthetic and security standards.
Specific Challenges Included:
- Maximising Capacity: Ensure the space can accommodate the most cycles possible without compromising accessibility or usability.
- Security: Providing secure cycle shelters that prevent theft while being easily accessible for commuters.
- Environmental Considerations: Incorporating eco-friendly materials and features to meet BREEAM sustainability standards.
Our Solution
We developed a tailored solution by installing four Bespoke 14-Space Two Tier Cycle Shetlers, including gated and open-fronted options. Our design prioritised security, sustainability, and user convenience while ensuring compliance with BREEAM standards.
1. Bespoke 14-Space Two Tier Cycle Shelter (Gated)
- Dimensions: 3,700mm W xx 2,100mm D x 2,750mm H
- Constructed using a hot-dipped galvanised frame compliant with BS EN ISO 1461:2022, ensuring long-term durability and rust protection.
- Clad in 656 twin wire security (RAL 7032) to provide enhanced security. The shelter had double mesh swing gates and access control for restricted entry, ensuring only authorised users could access the cycle storage.
- Sustainable Materials: The uprights were clad with clear-sealed, planned timber battens, adding a natural aesthetic while keeping the design eco-friendly.
- BREEAM-Compliant: All materials and processes followed BREEAM sustainable guidelines, contributing to the development’s overall green certification.
2. Bespoke 14-Space Two Tier Cycle Shelters (Open Front)
- It is designed similarly to the gated version but features an open front for easier access. This option provided flexibility for users who preferred more convenient walk-up access while benefiting from security through the enclosed rear sides.
3. Additional Sustainable Features
- Sedum Roof: One of the shelters was upgraded to feature a sedum roof with a raised parapet design and a three-piece drainage layer. This green roof enhanced the site’s biodiversity and improved its eco-friendly credentials.
- Biodiversity Habitat Panels: All units included biodiversity panels on the upper external sides, encased with heavy-duty wire mesh. These panels provide habitats for local wildlife, further enhancing the site’s environmental impact.
4. Gas-Assisted Two Tier Rack Uplift
- The shelters were fitted with Gas-Assisted Two-Tier Racks, which made it easier for users to load and unload bicycles from the upper tiers. Thus, space was maximised without compromising user convenience.
Installation Process
Our team completed the installation within the project’s tight deadlines while ensuring disruption to the ongoing construction works.
Key Aspects of the Installation:
- Ground Preparation: The installation assumes level foundations and the presence of site-issued pallet trucks for material distribution.
- Single-Hit Delivery & Installation: materials were delivered in a single hit to reduce logistical complexity, and the installation was completed swiftly to ensure the facility was ready for use without delay.
- Waste Management: All waste generated from the installation was disposed of on-site using the client’s waste disposal systems.
Results
The Perfume Factory project delivered a secure, user-friendly cycle storage solution that met the client’s expectations and sustainability goals. The installation provided:
- Secure Storage for 56 Bicycles: The user of Two-Tier Racks maximised space, while the gated shelters offered added security.
- Sustainable Design: The integration of timber cladding, a sedum roof, and biodiversity panels ensured that the shelters contributed positively to the site’s overall environmental impact.
- Enhanced User Experience: Gas-Assisted Two-Tier Racks and Open-Front Shelters provided easy access for all users, encouraging more cyclists to commute sustainably.
